Ukrainian-American Environmental Association

The Ukrainian-American Environmental Association is a private, non-governmental organization founded in 2004 and chartered in both the United States and Ukraine. It is a network of almost 900 Ukrainian and American NGOs, academic researchers, businesses, and government officials to facilitate the exchange of information on a broad array of environmental issues including, but not limited to, energy policy, climate change, air and water pollution, toxic wastes, soil conservation, sustainable agriculture, and wildlife and wilderness protection.

Incorporated in Washington DC, and chartered in Ukraine, UAEA is initially working out of offices in both Takoma Park, Maryland (USA) and in Rivne, Ukraine.

Contributions will support UAEA’s ongoing work in Ukraine. In the United States, UAEA is a tax-exempt (501 c-3) organization and gifts by U.S. taxpayers are tax-deductible as provided by law. PANEL DISCUSSION AND WEBCAST – ENERGY OPTIONS FOR UKRAINE

WHAT

The Washington Group, in conjunction with the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation, the U.S.-Ukraine Business Council, and the Ukrainian American Environmental Association, is hosting a panel of speakers who will discuss options for Ukraine to become energy independent, including energy efficiency, renewable energy, fossil fuels, and nuclear power. The purpose of the discussion “Achieving National Security for Ukraine Through Energy Independence and Diversification” is to explore sustainable energy options for Ukraine and raise public awareness on the energy issues facing Ukraine today.

Speakers:

1. Dr. William S. Woodward, Vice President – Holtec International: Nuclear Energy (pro).
2. Michael Mariotte, Executive Director – Nuclear Information and Resource Service: Nuclear Energy (con).
3. Ed Chow, Senior Fellow – Center for Strategic and International Studies Energy Program: Fossil Fuels (oil, gas, and coal).
4. Brian Castelli, Chief Operating Officer – Alliance to Save Energy: Energy Efficiency.

 UAEA Goals

UAEA’s near-term goal is to evolve a large network of American and Ukrainian non-profit organizations, educational institutions, businesses, government agencies, and interested citizens working on various aspects of environmental policy.

Through this network, UAEA will enable participants to more effectively influence important environmental decisions on the local and national levels.

Longer-term goals include:

1. Developing a data base of environmental indicators in Ukraine and the U.S.;
2. Issuing short reports and policy recommendations to address environmental problems in both countries;
3. Facilitating professional exchanges, student scholarships, and training projects;
4. Organizing of international conferences, business investments;
5. Building partnerships between U.S. and Ukrainian municipalities;
6. Holding joint research projects;
7. Developing municipal environmental awards programs.
